Technology Behind Veryfi's Detection System
What type of technology does Veryfi use to detect fake receipts?
At the core of Veryfi's detection pipeline is a vision model—a deep neural network trained on large and diverse sets of real and synthetic documents. This model doesn't rely on templates, rules, or fixed patterns; instead, it learns to recognize abstract features from document images and classifies them into specific categories.
How does Veryfi detect AI-generated receipts?
Our deep neural network is a vision-based model that analyzes the entire document image, learning abstract features such as texture, layout, and formatting.
It classifies documents and types that you can find under meta.pages.screenshot
object. It returns the screenshot.type
and score
.
meta.pages.screenshot
Returns the following types:
null
(can be interpreted as a real-world printed receipt, not a screenshot)mobile_screenshot
(interpreted as a mobile screenshot)other_screenshot
(interpreted as a digital image, like a desktop screenshot or tablet screenshot or a PDF)ai_generated
(interpreted as an image generated by AI models)
Please note that Fraud Suit ( that includes AI-generated detection) is not enabled by default. Please reach out to support@veryfi.com if you would like to access this feature.
How is Veryfi's detection model trained?
The model is trained on hundreds of thousands of labeled examples, developing an internal understanding of texture, layout, formatting, and signal inconsistencies. This data-driven approach allows the model to decide what visual elements matter most for accurate classification, rather than being hardcoded to look for specific visual artifacts. This comprehensive training enables the system to evaluate documents holistically, recognizing patterns and spatial relationships more likely to occur in synthetically generated content.
What makes Veryfi's approach different from traditional OCR systems?
Unlike traditional OCR tools that simply extract what they see without questioning document authenticity, Veryfi's platform is context-aware and performs document integrity analysis at both visual and semantic levels. Traditional systems might extract data accurately from a fake receipt but fail to identify it as fraudulent. Veryfi's technology doesn't just read documents—it understands them, evaluating global visual features learned during training to determine if a document is authentic or AI-generated.
Detection Capabilities and Examples
Can you provide examples of how Veryfi detects fake receipts?
We have tested our system against various AI-generated receipts, including those specifically designed to bypass validation. For example, when analyzing a fake Epic Steakhouse receipt that included believable line items, realistic formatting, and even physical distortions to evade detection, our model correctly classified it as AI-generated.
Similarly, our system identified a fake Walmart receipt that had been deliberately altered with noise and grain textures to imitate thermal print artifacts and low-resolution scanning—techniques that might fool other OCR systems or visual reviewers.
AI-Generated:
When analyzing the fake Walmart receipt that was deliberately designed to bypass document authenticity checks, Veryfi's vision model evaluated global visual features it had learned during training, such as:
Uniform alignment and spacing across text regions
Consistent brightness and contrast—too perfect for a scanned receipt
Inconsistencies in barcode rendering and document texture
Importance heatmap, showing what the model attends to:
Blue - less important, Red - most important.
Despite the sophisticated obfuscation attempts, the model correctly detected it as AI-generated by examining these and other learned visual features, rather than relying solely on the presence of specific artifacts.
Does the system require human verification for suspicious documents?
No, Veryfi's detection system operates without human intervention—detection happens instantly at the point of document ingestion. This automation allows for real-time fraud prevention without slowing down document processing workflows. The system leverages its AI training to make accurate determinations about document authenticity without requiring a human-in-the-loop review process.
Implementation and Evolution
How does Veryfi keep its detection technology up-to-date with evolving AI threats?
We continuously collect AI-generated receipts across different formats, industries, and styles to train and strengthen our models. As generative image tools become more advanced, our fraud detection engine evolves alongside them. This commitment to ongoing improvement ensures that our system remains effective against increasingly sophisticated AI-generated documents, providing continued protection for AP, expense, and loyalty systems.
Is Veryfi's technology scalable for organizations processing large volumes of documents?
Yes, Veryfi's AI-based detection system is designed to scale with an organization's document volume and security requirements. The technology performs instant detection without human intervention, making it suitable for processing large quantities of documents without creating bottlenecks. This scalability is essential for businesses that need to maintain both speed and trust in their document processing workflows.
